St. George's Episcopal Church St. George's Episcopal Church was the parish of Mary Washington and Revolutionary War general Dr. Hugh Mercer. The original church - built in 1732 - no longer stands, but the structure now standing was constructed in 1849. Like so many buildings in the area, it served as a Union hospital during the Civil War.
